II. The Announcement: Summer Game Fest 2026

At the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 6, 2026, Shift Up officially revealed Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, the direct sequel to the original Stellar Blade, alongside a debut gameplay trailer captured on PC. Unlike the first game — which was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment — Shift Up will handle global publishing for the sequel entirely on their own.

III. Story & Setting: A Darker Timeline

Blood Rain continues directly from the original timeline. The Earth that Eve fought so hard to reclaim in the original game has finally fallen. What remains of humanity has fled to distant space colonies, barely surviving.

The tone is noticeably darker — the developers have explicitly added heavy body horror elements. One trailer moment shows a civilian injecting an unknown substance, then instantly mutating into a Naytiba. The scene immediately stood out among the trailer’s most disturbing moments.

The cyberpunk city seen in the trailer also caught attention. Many players have compared its design to Chongqing — layered skyscrapers, a train running straight through a building, even the foggy rain. The resemblance is hard to miss.

IV. New Protagonist: Evie

One of the biggest changes in Blood Rain is the introduction of Evie, who replaces Eve as the game’s new protagonist. While official sources confirm this is a direct sequel in the same timeline, the narrative perspective and lead character have completely shifted.

Director Kim Hyung-tae explained in an interview that Evie belongs to an anti-terrorist special forces unit. In the trailer, she’s tracking a terrorist organization suspected of causing mutant transformations. He also confirmed that Evie is Eve’s “junior,” and there’s a “secret connection” between them. Eve doesn’t appear as a playable character in the trailer, but her voice briefly comes through Evie’s comms. Unsurprisingly, many players now speculate that Eve may appear in a supporting role or as an NPC.

Regarding Evie’s personality, Kim said: “She’s younger, smaller, shorter — but more aggressive. She gets into much more intense fights.” As for fan reactions to her design, Kim promised that costume variety will be “more appealing than the first game” — though he stressed that it’s not just about visual or sexual appeal. He wants Evie to be a well-rounded, compelling character.

V. Combat: From Longsword to Close-Quarters Brawling

The original Stellar Blade was known for its longsword-based combat. Blood Rain appears to shift the focus elsewhere.

Evie fights primarily with gauntlets, focusing on fast-paced hand-to-hand combat with heavy impact and aggressive combo chains. The trailer suggests a more aggressive combat style than the original — strikes land hard, with a sense of power and intensity that exceeds the first game.

But it’s not just punching. A brief shot at the end of the trailer shows Evie holding a short blade in a reverse grip. The director confirmed that as the story progresses, Evie will unlock multiple weapons — including the longsword. Each new weapon ties directly to story logic and character motivation, offering a richer combat experience later on.

Control-wise, the sequel keeps the original’s danger-attack warning system (yellow/red/blue/purple attacks), while the UI is planned to be significantly overhauled for better readability.

VI. Publishing Strategy: From PlayStation Exclusivity to Self-Publishing on All Platforms

Beyond gameplay, the most significant change may be the publishing strategy. Blood Rain won’t be published by Sony. Instead, Shift Up’s newly formed publishing division will handle the global release themselves. Based on Shift Up’s new publishing strategy, many expect the game to launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in spring 2027 — a complete departure from the original’s timed-exclusive strategy. If that holds true, Xbox players could potentially experience the series on day one for the first time.

As of June 2026, development has been ongoing for about a year. The game is still in early stages, but art direction has been finalized. Key gameplay systems and later portions of the narrative are still under development.

VII. A Standalone Story — With Plenty for Returning Players

Good news: Blood Rain is a self-contained story. According to Kim, new players can jump in without having played the original — the team has made accessibility a priority.

But returning players won’t be left out. The game contains plenty of foreshadowing tied to the first game. “Eve’s story isn’t over yet,” Kim said. Key characters from the original may still appear as NPCs or in other forms.

VIII. What Really Matters Right Now

For most players, Evie is the big talking point from the trailer. But from an industry perspective, the more interesting story is Shift Up’s move toward self-publishing.

From Stellar Blade to Blood Rain, Shift Up is trying to transform this once PlayStation-exclusive franchise into a long-term IP that they can self-publish and operate across multiple platforms.

Whether Evie can live up to Eve’s legacy, and whether the new brawling combat will win over fans — that’ll have to wait for future hands-on demos.
