After its 2016 release, Senren Banka took first place overall in Getchu’s 2016 Bishoujo Game Awards. As of February 2026, the developer announced that global cumulative sales had surpassed one million copies. As of July 2026, the Steam version has accumulated over 36,000 user reviews, with the positive rating holding at around 99%. A decade later, Senren Banka still commands remarkable attention. During spring break, protagonist Arichi Masaomi is sent by his mother to help at his grandfather’s inn in the hot spring town of Hoori. While taking part in an event at the shrine to draw the sacred blade “Murasamemaru”, he accidentally breaks it. As a result, he becomes connected to the shrine and is proposed to enter an engagement with the shrine’s priestess, Yoshino Tomotake.

Just like that, Masaomi ends up staying in Hoori. But this rural hot spring town, steeped in traditional Japanese atmosphere, is far more complicated than it seems. Hoori harbors a curse passed down through generations – and Masaomi soon finds himself entangled with Yoshino the priestess, the ninja guard Hitachi Mako, the spirit girl Murasame who resides within the blade, and the exchange student Reina Liechtenauer from Northern Europe.

Sounds fantastical? Don’t worry – Yuzusoft never lets the worldbuilding get too heavy. The curse is real, but so is the everyday life. Most of your time is spent bantering with these girls, eating sweets, and visiting festivals – the fantasy elements are just seasoning for the romance.

Characters: There’s Someone for Everyone

What Senren Banka is most praised for is its character writing.

Yoshino Tomotake: The shrine priestess, and the one Masaomi becomes engaged to through a twist of fate. Proper and seemingly cold on the surface, she’s actually full of emotion. Her famous catchphrase has become one of the most recognizable memes among Chinese visual novel fans.

Hitachi Mako: A ninja girl raised to be a priestess’s guard. Diligent at work but mischievous by nature, she loves playing pranks. The legendary “high-class ninja vs. aliens” scene (a fan-made gag that circulates in the community) is still fondly remembered by players.

Murasame: A spirit girl who resides within the sacred blade Murasamemaru, having lived for hundreds of years. For newcomers, that means – no matter your taste, there’s bound to be a character who wins you over.

The “King of Moege”: Why Simplicity Became Its Greatest Appeal

Among critics of Senren Banka, the most common complaint is “the story is too simple.” And they’re not wrong.

Senren Banka’s story isn’t particularly deep. Yuzusoft sets up what looks like a complex folkloric world – curses, evil spirits, sacred blades, exorcism – but the way it resolves things is fairly light. Some plot threads are handled simply, and the dramatic tension doesn’t reach the heights of more story-driven works.

Life in the real world is already exhausting and dark enough – why put yourself through more of it in fiction? Senren Banka’s answer is simple: you don’t have to.

It’s not a piece of art meant to make you contemplate life – it’s a dessert meant to help you relax. Yuzusoft has perfected this dessert – the art quality is high enough that countless CGs end up as wallpapers in players’ collections, with dynamic layering that makes hair and sleeves sway gently. The Japanese-style BGM features traditional instruments like the shamisen, the interface is clean, the presentation is polished, and the overall experience is exceptionally smooth. This reputation reflects why many players consider Senren Banka one of the best examples of the moege formula.

Why Is It So Popular in China?

An interesting observation: among Steam reviews, Chinese-language players make up the vast majority, with Simplified Chinese reviews far outnumbering all other languages.

A Japanese game, developed in Japan, by a Japanese company, originally released in Japanese – and yet Chinese-language reviews on Steam far outpace every other language. This kind of player demographic is highly unusual for a visual novel.

One million copies sold over a decade, consistently high ratings on ErogameScape, and a Steam user approval rate approaching 99% – these numbers reflect its lasting impact on players. It may not be “the greatest visual novel ever made,” but it’s arguably “the best entry point for newcomers to the genre.”

If you’re looking for an intense, edge-of-your-seat epic adventure, this game will let you down. But if all you want is to spend time in a cherry blossom-falling hot spring town, having a sweet romance with a few charming girls – then for around $40, what you’ll get is a light, sweet, and memorable romantic experience.

In July 2026, the official announcement confirmed that Senren Banka will receive a TV anime adaptation in 2027. A decade on, the momentum continues. If you’ve ever thought about trying a visual novel, Senren Banka remains an excellent place to start.
