In 2015, Youngho woke up in a classroom at Sehwa High School and found the entire school had turned into hell. The Coma: Cutting Class introduced countless players to this ordinary Korean high school student. Five years later, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters shifted the focus to Mina, leaving Youngho’s fate an open question.

In 2024, The Coma 2B: Catacomb finally filled in that gap.

It’s not The Coma 3 — it’s a “story bridge” between the first game and the second. You return as Youngho, experiencing firsthand the darkness that lies between the events of The Coma: Recut and The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters.

From Classroom to Catacomb: Youngho Is Back

The Coma 2B: Catacomb picks up right where the first game left off. Youngho has finally escaped the terrifying mirror dimension called “The Coma” and is back at school, trying to live a normal life. But something is wrong. Soon, he finds himself trapped once again in this twisted world.

This time, he must collect fragments of Yeseul’s notes and find a powerful relic sword capable of standing against the Vicious Sister. But things are more complicated than they seem — an unexpected visitor has entered the mirror dimension, and a new character connected to Yeseul appears to help Youngho. Deep within the massive facility beneath Dokaebi Market, Youngho must unravel the mystery and confront the Vicious Sister head-on.

One of the most interesting things about the game is where it fits into the series’ timeline. The story of The Coma 2B: Catacomb takes place during the same period as The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, but from Youngho’s perspective. If you’ve played The Coma 2, you’ll see familiar events reinterpreted from another angle, further filling out the series’ overall timeline.

Familiar Formula, More Vicious AI

In terms of gameplay, The Coma 2B continues the series’ signature 2D side-scrolling survival horror style. Running, hiding, and evading — these remain the core ways to deal with pursuers.

The game introduces a stamina system — running and rolling both consume stamina. Once depleted, Youngho enters a Groggy state, significantly reducing his mobility. The flashlight also requires careful management — it helps you explore, but it also makes you an easier target.

Dokaebi Market is a significant new area in this installment, where players can trade items to prepare for life-or-death situations. Additionally, the game features character interaction and relationship-building elements, with certain choices unlocking special interactions, dating scenes, and extra collectible content.

The killer AI has also become more vicious. The official description explicitly refers to the “more vicious AI”, and subsequent updates have further adjusted the speed and spawn rates of pursuing enemies. The result is more aggressive pursuit behavior, making every encounter feel more dangerous.

A Narrative Bridge Connecting the First and Second Games

The Coma 2B: Catacomb‘s greatest value isn’t gameplay innovation — it’s answering the question that series fans most want answered: what exactly happened between The Coma: Recut and The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters?

One player noted: “The story of The Coma 2B takes place between the first and second games, letting players control Youngho on a psychological and survival adventure.” Its story runs parallel to The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, filling the narrative gap between the two mainline entries.

For series fans, this is a title that’s hard to overlook. It makes the entire series’ story feel more complete and cohesive.

Issues Worth Noting

The Coma 2B: Catacomb is not without its flaws.

The initial difficulty was a common criticism among players at launch. Subsequent updates have added new save points and adjusted enemy speed, trap density, and stamina mechanics, improving the overall experience.

The campaign is relatively short. As a side-story title, its scope doesn’t match the mainline entries. Some players note that the playtime is shorter than The Coma 2, with certain levels feeling like “remixed” versions of areas from the second game.

The opening requires patience before reaching the core content, according to some reviews.

The post-game content gets significantly harder. The additional content unlocked after the main story is extremely challenging — though subsequent updates have eased this somewhat.

Who Is The Coma 2B: Catacomb For?

Recommended for:

  • Players who’ve finished The Coma: Recut and The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters and want to know what happened between them
  • Fans of parallel storytelling and lore-rich narratives
  • Those who enjoy 2D survival horror and “run-and-hide” gameplay
  • Players interested in Korean school horror settings

Not recommended for:

  • Players who haven’t played the previous games (the story heavily relies on prior knowledge — jumping in directly will diminish the experience)
  • Those with low tolerance for high difficulty and repeated deaths
  • Players seeking a long, content-rich experience
  • Anyone who dislikes repeated chase-and-evade sequences

The Verdict

The Coma 2B: Catacomb is a title tailored specifically for series fans. It’s not The Coma 3 — it offers no groundbreaking gameplay innovations and its scope is relatively modest. But it fills the single most important narrative gap in the series — the story of Youngho between The Coma: Recut and The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters.

If you’re a dedicated fan of the series, The Coma 2B: Catacomb is hard to skip. It makes the series’ overall narrative more complete and gives Youngho’s character arc a clearer resolution.

If you haven’t played the previous entries, start with The Coma: Recut or The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters first. Otherwise, you’ll miss the core value of this side story — completing a chapter of Youngho’s journey.
